From Good To Great: What Does It Take?

Good evening everyone.  Lately there has been something on my mind that I’ve been dying to find out.  Those of you that know me, know that I am an ISSA Certified Fitness Trainer and you also know that I am working towards becoming an IFBB Professional Bodybuilder.  My goals are to become the best and most successful trainer, own the most successful fitness center/sports complex, and to become the most decorated bodybuilder to ever walk on the planet earth.  Of course it is easy to say what you want to do or become but how do you become the best is the question.  There are plenty of people that are good at something but only a handful of people that are great at something.  That is where the question of what does it take to go from good to great comes in.  Here are my thoughts.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

The first thing you must do is pay great attention to detail.  The other day I watched a video on youtube about Phil Heath and how he trains for his competitions.  For those of you that do not know who Phil Heath is, he is the current 2 time Mr. Olympia.  While watching the videos and taking notes, I noticed how much attention to detail he has during his workouts.  I’ve watched other guys bodybuilding videos on youtube and they talk about the basics in their workouts but the detail just isn’t there.  You would be amazed at how one tiny detail can mean the difference between winning and losing.  If you have ever played football, you know that film study is a prime example of paying attention to detail.  You can watch film of your opponent and see what plays they run in certain situations or you can take it a step further and notice their tendencies.  For example, if you are playing defensive back, you learn to read a wide receivers eyes when the ball is thrown to him.  Most likely, his eyes will get wide and full as the ball approaches.  There are many different things that players do on offense and on defense that may give away what the play will be.  Paying attention to detail may be important but I do not think its the most important.

POUND THE ROCK

You are probably wondering what I mean when I say pound the rock right?  Pounding the rock is being persistent and consistent.  No matter what happens, keep on pounding the rock.  Lets face it, you’ll never accomplish anything in life if your not persistent and consistent neither.  This is a period when you learn what works and what doesn’t work.  You will probably try what seems like millions of different ways to achieve the results you’re looking for and will have no success until that very last time.  By then you have become an expert on the matter because of the trials that you had to go through to reach your goal.  Another reason you have to stay persistent is because not everyone will believe in your dream.  People will tell you what you can’t do and won’t be able to do simply because they either can’t or they just don’t have what it takes.  Remember that this dream is yours and not anyone else’s.  You must ignore all the negativity and keep in mind the goals that you are trying to reach.  Pounding the rock is a very important aspect in achieving greatness but I personally think that there is something else that you absolutely must have to achieve greatness.

MENTAL TOUGHNESS

Without mental toughness you are dead in the water.  This probably can go hand in hand with pounding the rock because you have to be mentally tough to endure some of the things that you will go through to reach greatness.  Take a look at all of the great athletes that you can think of and then think about how they performed when the game got tough.  That is what ascended them into greatness where an athlete that is just a good athlete may not have been able to perform under that type of pressure.

FINAL THOUGHT

These 3 points are what I think are the main things that you need to go from good to great in whatever it is you are doing.  Of course you can’t forget about hard work and preparation.  You need to work hard at what you’re doing and prepare accordingly.
